Types of In-Home Care to Know About

20 JULY 2022

Most if not all older adults want to live in their own homes for as long as possible instead of moving in with a relative or relocating to a senior living community.

If you’re concerned about the health and safety of your elderly loved one, hiring a caregiver to provide in-home care may be the best option.
Independently hired caregiver
You hire someone and pay them, typically with cash or a check. Pay is based on what you and the worker agree upon. You are tasked with verifying the worker’s background and setting up their taxes and insurance as well.
Conventional home care agency
The agency screens, hires, and pays for its workers, and some also offer care planning services. You must pay based on the number of hours performed and the agreed-upon charge after receiving an invoice.
Insurance, bonds, and tax payments for all employees are the agency’s responsibility. The management is there to help you with any issues that may arise.
Referral agency
Combining characteristics of both home care agencies and independent contractors. You pay directly to the caregiver with the agreed-upon rates. The referral agency gets a referral fee from you.
And lastly, depending on the circumstances, you may be expected to pay taxes, insurance premiums, or even workers’ compensation claims.
